“Joe Bonamassa Live from RAH” trailer and DVD cover released. Jul.09
Found this image and the video at Kevin “Caveman” Shirley´s site. He writes “…Here is the trailer from the concert at the Royal Albert Hall, which Joe played on May 4 this year, which was just incredible. It’s out on September 29th (although I still have a couple of mixes to do!) – but it really looks amazing. Yes, that is Eric Clapton trading solos with The Boss. Enjoy!…”(K.S)
What can we say- “…it really looks amazing.” Check out the trailer here.
Stavanger Rock-Doc Conference 2009
June 4th we´ll be screening a 35mm print of “Global Metal” and a 2k D-cinema copy of “Flight 666″ in Stavanger. Sam and Scot are coming over to explain about the process behind getting these films done. It should be a very interesting day for both filmmakers and musicians based here.

Saft Film provided not only Director of Photography Martin Hawkes to the Banger Films shoot of the Joe Bonamassa “Live at Royal Albert Hall” DVD but Martin took with him three camera operators from Stavanger. Cinematography now being one of Norway´s biggest cultural exports- catching up soon with Norwegian Black Metal! ;-)
“Flyger” Test Shoot April 2009
We just shot a test for the “Flyger” short film with director Martin Loic Lotherington and lead actor Glen Andre Kaada: Pictured here with co-star “Vidar” on his face.
SXSW Audience Choice Award! March 2009
“Flight 666″ wins the audience choice award for best documentary in the “24 Beats Per Second” section of South By South West Festival. We´ll drink to that!
The First “Flight 666″ Reviews coming out of SXSW
Check out this article in the Toronto Star for the initial feedback.
The Star´s Ben Rayner writes that the movie “…explodes from the screen with such roaring, surround-sound presence during its performance segments that one might as well be pressed up against the security fencing in the front row, throwing two-fingered metal salutes to the sky, at an actual Maiden show.” And continues “…During the intro to a particularly ripping version of “Number of the Beast” that uncorks midway through the film, a chap in the front row got so excited that he burst from his seat, ripped off his shirt and began twirling it over his head like a lasso.” Word!
Front Page of the Globe and Mail! March 2009
“Iron Maiden – Flight 666″ Poster and release date. Feb 2009
April 21st 2009 will be “Maiden day” with the release of “Flight 666″ in cinemas world wide. Its amazing to see the Maiden machine at work.
“Eloquent Vandals” Teaser/trailer online soon! Nov 2008
By taking advantage of the relaxed atmosphere at the festival of NuArt we were able to make very candid portraits of each of the 08 crew- a cross section of street art today: Blek le Rat, Chris Stain, Nick Walker, Word To Mother, D*face, Dotmasters, Herakut, Know Hope, Sten&Lex, GRL and Zeus.
“Eloquent Vandals” teaser coming soon.
Global Metal DVD release. Nov 2008
The feature length documentary “Global Metal”- that Martin Hawkes was the director of photography on- has been released on DVD in Canada.
We received ours the other day and were happy to see “Metal Baraka” on the extra materials disc. Its nice to see some of the B-roll that didn´t make it into the final cut being used in the extras disc: Its a true homage to the Aaton A-minima!
New DoP Showreel. October 2008
New Director of Photography Showreels for Martin Hawkes are on-line. Divided between types of work – corporate and music videos being considered “commercial”. The feature documentary work is “select scenes” only.

NuArt08. September 2008
A good friend of mine, Martyn Reed, is the Curator and Founder of the Nuart festival here in Stavanger. Street artists from around the globe descend upon Stavanger and put up new works. He´s asked me to make a doco before but its never worked with my schedule. Well, this year I said yes and ended up meeting and interviewing (with the help of Leon C6 (dotmasters)) the entire Nuart08 crew: Their inspiration, motivation, art and the city- Stinkfinger as they call it! More on Nuart08 later.
“Darlah” Short Film Shoot. August 2008
This is a film frame from “Darlah”, a short film which is a teaser for a book that is to be given to all Grade 9 kids in Rogaland. Sissel Christensen was the director. Her background is as a visual artist and she wanted to mix Drama and Art films together. It was a visually ambitious project- considering the budget and the schedule. It was a nice experience and we had a good collaboration. With one big source of light we could emulate the harsh light that we associate with the surface of the moon. Planet earth will be added in the sky during post.
Posting Iron Maiden
Found this shot on Kevin Shirley´s website. He´s Maiden´s mix master. Check out his website to see his posting on the work done for the Maiden Doco. Photo: K.Shirley
Summer Holiday. June-July 2008
Riding the Rocket with your head out the window in T.O. Living the dream.
Dave went fishing. Good times.
“Iron Maiden” and “Rush” in Western Canada. May-June 2008
Called out by Sam and Scot to do some initial interviews with Canadian rock band legends Rush in Calgary. We then drove over the Rockies to meet Maiden in Vancouver for some additional interviews. The drive through Jasper National Park is spectacular.
Saw this bumper sticker in the Rockies. Classic RV country.
Red One- the image capturing computer. May 2008
We had a large, high end project to complete with a very short turn around time. I suggested we shoot with the Red One for the first time. I had also never mountain climbed before so it was a first in many ways. The rental house did not have a view finder for the camera so we had to use the on board monitor. I did not want to do any fiddling with the gear while hanging on the cliff face so we had it fully built in a metal case that was raised and lowered as need be. This worked fine and the camera performed as it should have.
Trailer and release date info online for Global Metal!
It looks like Banger Inc. has finally made a site for Global Metal. Too bad they never did the blog. Check out the trailer for Global Metal here.
MTV broadcasts the Saft production of the World at Large “When Things Fall Apart” video.
This is a bit of a victory for us because the band had no budget and received no funding at all. STAR can kiss our collective asses. We completed it on a shoe string budget. Having it broadcast on MTV was a real bonus for the band and the video. See the MTV “Spanking New” introduction here. Or scroll down the News page to check out the video.
Leader Films joins with SAFT film to take it next level!
Dave Leader with his no holds barred attitude will be the one to watch in 2008

It Flies! Jan 2008
One less thing to worry about. The Maiden jet can fly. First stop Mumbai, Feb.1
Iron Maiden. Dec 2007
Starting this crazy trip on the Maiden jet in Feb 2008 with the Global Banger crew. Should be interesting. More news later.
World at Large. Music promo. Dec 2007
After shooting so many documentaries this year I said yes to a low budget music video. Somebody told me the other day that they couldn´t believe that I was still doing that. Oh, well. I guess when you really enjoy doing something…
From the shooting of “When things Fall Apart”.
Bryne. Sandnes vitenskaps (science) museum wanted a film where two different audio tracks may be listened to. On the one track you have the potter describing his work and on the other you have a scientist explaining technically what goes on. Interesting shoot.
This is a film frame from the camera before CC. Leader Films producing/Directing
“Rent i Stavanger”. Commercial. Nov 2007
Leader films asked me to Dp a PSA against polluting. The market is young people and we really strived to make it look like an ad for pop. The Nov weather was harsh and we had rain, hail, sleet and snow. Good times. Here´s a frame from the camera- before CC.
Himmel & Hav Apr/May/Aug 2007
Stavanger. Finding this little compartment not really used for anything on Siri Kalvig´s electric car saved the mise en scène. Those cars are great! http://www.elbilnorge.no/
Tromsø. Timelapse. The air is so clear that far north due to the lack of atmospheric dust. i like!
Kautokeino, Norway. Went straight from Rio via home with an eye infection to the farthest north you can go in mainland Norway for the “Himmel & Hav” TV series. Sameland. The Same people that we met were incredible and I look forward to returning there with my family as a tourist. If you ever get a chance you must go.
Global Metal (Phase 2) Feb/Mar 2007
Rio. Just trying to keep it together after the shortest turn around time ever!
Sao Paolo. They wanted us to pay to shoot from the roof top restaurant. While they all were busy haggling I placed the minima on the ledge and started to roll. Notice the lighter as camera support. Stealth!
Dubai. We met a lot of cool people from all over the middle east there but otherwise what an odd city. Was hoping to get out into the desert but we never had the time.
Bangalore. Frank and I with the cinesaddle car mount. Its a shot that I wanted to do already in Tokyo. Looking back at Sam with the reflections of the night ext on the windshield. Like Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation”.
Bangalore Timelapse. We were able to set up the camera before they started letting people in to the “stadium”- really just built for the show. We let it roll until after sunset. Sweet. What´s crazy is that the police took away everybody´s water bottles as they let them in at 3pm, with six hours to wait in the +36 afternoon heat. Our friends from Mumbai meant that the afternoon train is hotter and packed with more people!
Shooting with the aminima in Mumbai. Movies and movie making are so popular in India that everybody just loves to pose for the camera.
This fall has been very busy with the shooting of “Global Metal”. The sequel to “Metal, A Headbanger´s Journey”. The shoot took me to Japan, Indonesia, China, Poland and Israel. A crazy 7 week haul. Lots of great people in great locations.
We continue the journey in Feb/Mar 2007. More later.
Wroclaw, Poland. Frank took this shot with a cell phone he bought in China. Too bad he didn´t find out that it had a manual focus on it until much later.
We were told by our translator that a day in the Beijing smog was like smoking seventy cigarettes.
Shooting with the Aaton A-minima didn´t attract the guard´s attention until we did a long walk past them, ending with a 180 move around Sam in front of them and the portrait of Mao. Walk away. Just walk away.
While shooting on the Great Wall we lost track of time and missed the last cable car down. We had to hike down in the dark. No extra charge.
Filming in Jakarta´s main mosque on the last day of Ramadan.
The crew in Kyoto. (L to R: Me, Scot McFadyen, Frank Shortt, Victoria Hirst, Kevin McKenzie. Photo taken by Sam Dunn.)
Night timelapse in the busy Shibuya district of Tokyo.
Wacken, Germany. “Global Metal” shoot.
Up early to shoot a timelapse of the sun rising over all the sleeping metal heads. More on “Global Metal” later.
Rotterdam, Netherlands. Stolt Shipping stills and video shoot.
First A.C Frank Shortt and Producer/Director Finn Skoglund make good use of the time they had waiting for a taxi to line up all the gear. Nice work!
The site is different in every browser that it has been tested in. “Collateral damage” the programmer says. We make films not websites. Hope you enjoy.
